Rapposelli\, PT\, President\, APTA Delaware \n______________________________________________ \n2:45 PM –  4:45 PM – “Ethical Considerations in Healthcare Decision Making” (2.0 CEU) \nSpeaker: Brandon Ambrosino\, PhD \nBrandon Ambrosino is an ethicist and theologian at Villanova University\, where he currently serves as Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor in the Augustine and Culture Seminar Program. He holds a PhD in Theology and Ethics and a Master of Theological Studies from Villanova University\, and is currently enrolled in the Bioethics and Health Law Master of Arts program at Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine. Brandon is currently an editorial fellow of the American Medical Association’s Journal of Ethics\, for which he is editing a special journal issue on Hypochondria\, Illness Anxiety\, and the limits of medicine. Brandon is a widely-published author and journalist\, with writing appearing in a variety of outlets\, including The New York Times\, Boston Globe\, BBC\, Washington Post\, The Globe & Mail\, The Atlantic\, The Economist\, Christian Century\, Commonweal\, and Playboy — which he only reads for the articles. His first book\, Speaking of God in a World Gone Wrong\, will be published in Fall 2025 by Morehouse Academic. Brandon is a member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities\, the American Society for Dental Ethics\, the Institute on Religion in an Age of Science\, and the Society of Christian Ethics. \nBrandon’s interest in bioethics began in 2018\, when his husband Andy asked for advice about a disabled patient. As one of the only general dentists treating Delaware’s disabled population\, Andy spends a lot of time helping these patients navigate the complicated healthcare system. Thorny ethical issues often arise in the course of this treatment\, requiring Brandon and Andy to engage in creative moral deliberation. Brandon and Andy have written about some of their work in this area for the Delaware Journal of Public Health. \nBrandon enjoys CrossFit\, mountain biking\, and tap dancing\, as well as playing The Floor is Lava with his adorable three year-old nephew. If he isn’t in Delaware or on campus at Villanova\, he’s probably in Disney World. He and Andy are Disney Adults but they try to not be insufferable about it.

SUMMARY:CRPS: A Journey from misunderstood and doomed to understanding and hope
DESCRIPTION:Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)\, is a perplexing condition that challenges patients and healthcare professionals alike. The audience will learn how the Budapest Criteria is one tool that can aid in diagnosing CRPS. Dr. Caldwell will then unravel the neurobiological underpinnings of CRPS\, emphasizing how the somatosensory cortex and other parts of the central nervous system process signals from the periphery. Lastly\, attendees will traverse principles of pain neuroscience education and graded motor imagery as tools used to retrain sensation and to return to function. \nAbout the Speaker \nDeAndre W. Caldwell\, PT\, DPT\, ATC\, OCS\, Cert. MDT\, TPS \nDr. DeAndre W. Caldwell is the physical therapy program manager at Christiana Care Rehabilitation Services in Smyrna\, DE and he is passionate about treating those with low back pain and chronic pain. \nDeAndre is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist\, as recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and an APTA certified clinical instructor. In addition\, he has advanced training and holds dual credentials as a certified therapeutic pain specialist and certified Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) clinician for treatments of low back pain\, neck pain and extremity pain. \nDeAndre’s career ranges from working in sports medicine with the New York Giants to working with those with spinal cord injuries at Magee rehabilitation in Philadelphia. DeAndre regularly lectures on treatments of spinal conditions as well as Chronic pain at the Collegiate\, local and national level. \nHe is very active in his church and in the community. DeAndre has a message of hope that the body is extremely adaptable and there is often a chance for positive change.

DESCRIPTION:This intermediate level course meets the NJSBPTE 2.5 hours of required ethics instruction.  In a virtual format\, participants will revisit foundational ethics concepts\, such as the four principles\, ethics-related core values\, moral decision-making\, and the social contract for physical therapy practitioners.  Interactive polling of participants and/or Zoom break-out rooms may be used to enhance group discussion and interaction. \n About the Speaker \n  \nLee Ann Guenther\, PT\, DPT\, MS \nLee Ann Guenther\, PT\, DPT\, MS has been a NJ licensed physical therapist since she earned an entry-level degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She has practiced in a variety of clinical settings including acute rehabilitation\, acute care\, home care\, skilled nursing facilities\, and outpatient clinics. For more than a decade\, her primary practice has been the provision of pediatric physical therapy services. \n\nDr. Guenther was on the faculty of the Physical Therapy Program at Stockton University from 1989 to June of 2022 when she was honored by earning “Professor Emerita” status. She taught entry level\, post-professional and interprofessional ethics classes. Dr. Guenther also taught the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners approved “Ethics and Jurisprudence” or “Ethics” continuing education since the requirement was initiated in the 2008-2010 license cycle. \nDr. Guenther’s research has involved interprofessional education\, core values and ethical decision-making. She has presented her work at the Association of Schools of Allied Health’s (ASAHP) National Conference\, the international All Together Better Health Conference and APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting (CSM). Her current work “Use of an interprofessional virtual ethics event to enhance equity in clinical practice” has been accepted for a platform presentation at the ASAHP national conference in 10/2022. Dr. Guenther has published in the Journal of Allied Health Professions\, the PT Journal\, and the Journal of the HPA Section of the APTA. \nShe was a member of the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners and past Chair of the aptaNJ Ethics Committee. Dr. Guenther continues to serve on the Ethics Committee. SUMMARY:Pathophysiology and its Clinical Implications for Physical Therapy in Children with Cerebral Palsy (2 CEs)
DESCRIPTION:Cerebral Palsy is a common\, yet very complex\, childhood neurological disorder. This webinar will present current understanding of the pathophysiology of the neurologic and muscle tissue properties that result in weakness in children with CP.  The impact of that pathophysiology on posture and function\, including gait\, will be discussed.  Principles of treatment will be presented in relation to that pathophysiology\, including repetition\, frequency\, timing and intensity of therapy.  Current evidence of treatment such as botox\, serial casting\, backwards walking and whole body vibration will be some of the approaches discussed. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \n \nRosemary Gambatese\, PT\, MSPT \nRosemary Gambatese\, PT\, MSPT\, is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University with a BS in Biology and Arcadia University with an MSPT. She is a Clinical Specialist at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation’s Flanders outpatient campus. She is also an adjunct instructor at Rutgers University School of Health- Related Professions\, Department of Physical Therapy\, Newark campus.  In addition\, she is a consultant for early intervention in New Jersey for Sunny Days\, Inc. and contract therapist for agencies providing physical therapy in school settings. She has had over 15 years of experience as a school physical therapist working in a variety of public and non-public schools. Practicing for over 30 years\, Rose brings a wide range of experience and clinical expertise to her specialty areas of pediatrics and neurology. She has presented for APTANJ in the past including a case study on the use of constraint-induced therapy for a child with hemiplegia and seminars on evidenced-based treatment of congenital muscular torticollis and School PT. SUMMARY:The Foot/Ankle Revealed: Understanding the Subtalar and Midtarsal Joints (2 CEs)
DESCRIPTION:This course will provide education for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants regarding the examination and treatment of patients with foot/ankle injuries. Specific details will be provided regarding the assessment of the Subtalar\, Midtarsal and Talocrural joints. Specific concepts presented and demonstrated include Midtarsal joint mobility and lock-up\, forefoot equinus assessment and treatment as well as the relationship between the talocrural\, subtalar\, and Midtarsal joints. Videos will be used to demonstrate assessment techniques. Treatment interventions will be presented\, including manual techniques. The goal is for the participants to gain new information for their foot/ankle practice and understand how to utilize new techniques and a more detailed approach to foot/ankle assessment and treatment. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \n \nMegan Advani\, PT\, DPT\, MPT\, CMP \nMegan earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree from East Carolina University in 1999 and her post-professional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ\, SHRP in 2006. Megan has worked as a clinician in outpatient orthopedics for the past 23 years. She has been an Outpatient Rehab Manager for the past 7 years. SUMMARY:ACL Injury Prevention and Return to Sport Testing
DESCRIPTION:Anterior Cruciate tears are the most common ligamentous injury of the knee. Approximately 75% of ACL injuries are non-contact in nature. Sports that involve random intermittent multi-directional (RIMD) movement demands are associated with a higher rate of ACL injuries than those that do not have RIMD movement demands. This presentation will include a brief historic review of non- contact Anterior Cruciate injury prevention as well as a review of current programs to implement. Current literature will be reviewed to update injury and re-injury rates as well as modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors associated with non-contact ACL injuries. Advanced rehabilitation considerations and concepts of return to sport strengthening\, neuromuscular re-education and safe return to sport preparation will discussed. Two research validated safe to return to sport testing programs will be presented. The participants will learn how to introduce basic technology and applications into the clinic to assess these movements. \nAbout the Speaker \nBrian Mullins\, PT\, MS specializes in the care of complex physical therapy patients who need individualized physical therapy treatment. While at Duke University\, obtaining his Master’s degree\, he worked at The Center for Living\, Duke University’s premier wellness center. Here Brian worked with orthopaedic\, neurological\, cardiac and pulmonary patients who needed varying levels of care. \nBrian received his Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with a concentration in athletic training from Glassboro State College and has more than 20 years experience working with the everyday athlete to elite athletes of all ages. \nRecently\, Brian completed advanced training in functional biomechanics of the lower quarter; integrating technology into physical therapy practice from the Movement Performance Institute in Los Angeles California. SUMMARY:Management of the Patient with Patellofemoral Pain: An Update on a Clinical Practice Guideline
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Handout \nSpeaker: Lisa T. Hoglund\, PT\, PhD\, Professor\, Department of Physical Therapy\, Thomas Jefferson University \nPatellofemoral pain (PFP) is a common condition among adolescents and adults that causes significant pain\, reduced function\, and reduced physical activity. PFP is the number one cause of pain in runners. Even more concerning\, PFP is often chronic\, frequently recurs\, and may lead to development of patellofemoral osteoarthritis. One challenge to healthcare practitioners when treating patients with PFP is that it is not a homogenous condition. Similar to low back pain\, not all patients with PFP have the same impairments or respond to the same treatment. The Patellofemoral Pain Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG)\, published by the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy\, summarized the scientific evidence and can be used as an evidence-based guide for management of patients with PFP. This course will review and apply the PFP CPG evidence to a patient case to demonstrate use of proposed PFP subcategories to guide clinical decision making. Dr. Hoglund’s research focuses on the biomechanical factors\, outcome measurement\, and conservative management of patellofemoral pain and knee osteoarthritis. She has received both external and internal funding to support her research and has published and presented her research findings nationally and internationally. To date\, Dr. Hoglund has 12 peer-reviewed publications and over 20 peer-reviewed published abstracts. She has practiced in a variety of clinical settings including acute rehabilitation\, acute care\, home care\, skilled nursing facilities\, and outpatient clinics. For the past eleven years\, her primary practice has been providing pediatric school-based physical therapy. \nSince 1989\, Dr. Guenther has been on the faculty of the Physical Therapy Program at Stockton University where she served as the Director of Clinical Education for more than twenty-five years.  As a member of the faculty\, Dr. Guenther taught entry level\, as well as post-professional\, classes on ethics. She has also taught New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners approved classes in “Ethics and Jurisprudence” or “Ethics” since the requirement was initiated in the 2008-2010 license cycle. \nDr. Guenther’s current research involves inter-professional education and its impact on practice. Related work has been presented at the Association of Schools of Allied Health’s National Conference\, the international All Together Better Health Conference and APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting (CSM). Dr. Guenther is also exploring the impact of a program of yoga and mindfulness on the behavior of school-aged children. Her past scholarly activity has involved the APTA professional core values and ethics in clinical decision-making of physical therapists. Related work has been presented at both WCPT and the APTA’s CSM; it has also been published in the PT Journal and the journal of the HPA Section. She is a former member of the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners and past Chair of the APTANJ Ethics Committee. SUMMARY:Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (2 CEs)
DESCRIPTION:Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is a composite of genital\, urologic and sexual sequalae stemming from a hypoestrogenic state during the menopause transition. More than 50% of women experience symptoms of GSM post-menopause\, negatively impacting quality of life issues regarding continence\, sexual function and general well-being. Adams\, Ph.D. \nDr. Sandra Daise Adams is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Montclair State University. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Georgia\, a Master of Education in Biology Education from Georgia State University\, a Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of Pittsburgh\, and a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics with a research focus on virology from Georgia State University. \nDr. Adams regularly teaches courses in Principles of Biology\, Virology\, Immunology and Viruses and Disease. This course will educate the physical therapist and the physical therapist assistant on thoracic spine mechanics as they relate to overhead upper extremity movement. A review of the anatomy of the thoracic spine and scapulothoracic joint will be presented. Additionally\, the surrounding musculature will be discussed as it relates to functional movements of the upper extremity. Clinical assessment and treatment techniques will be presented to help the clinician assess range of motion and functional mobility. Treatment techniques included will be patient self-mobilization\, neuromuscular re-education\, and therapeutic exercises and activities. Functional examples of the role of the thoracic spine will be discussed including examples of athletic activities. The clinical assessment and treatment approaches will be further developed with case examples. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER \n \nBarbara Kutch\, PT\, DPT\, CSCS\, USAW \nBarb graduated from Stockton University in 2010 with her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. In addition to being a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach\, she has been Titleist Performance Institute Medical level 3 certified since 2017 and became a Certified Running Gait Analyst through the Association of Clinical Excellence in 2018. Challenging behaviors can be frustrating as therapists generally report a lack of preparation for managing these behaviors. Attendees will be introduced to the four main functions of human behavior and the related strategies to provide a positive\, functional therapy session. Attendees will also learn how to observe and modify antecedents and consequences to behaviors to increase positive\, engaged behaviors and to decrease ‘challenging’ behaviors of the children they serve. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \n \nAlyssa LaForme Fiss\, PT\, PhD \nAlyssa LaForme Fiss\, PT\, PhD is a Professor of Physical Therapy at Texas Women’s University in Dallas\, Texas. She received her Bachelor and Master degrees in Physical Therapy at The Ohio State University and her PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Kentucky. She is a Board-Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist and has worked in a variety of pediatric clinical settings over her career. Dr. Fiss’s research focuses on developmental trajectories of children with cerebral palsy and on facilitation of adaptive behaviors in young children with disabilities. The daughter of a child behavioral psychologist\, Dr. Fiss has spent time and effort to understand the roll of behavior strategies to improve intervention effectiveness. She has included behavior content in her entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy pediatric course for the past decade.
