SUMMARY:ACL Injury Prevention and Return to Sport Testing
DESCRIPTION:Anterior Cruciate tears are the most common ligamentous injury of the knee. Approximately 75% of ACL injuries are non-contact in nature. Sports that involve random intermittent multi-directional (RIMD) movement demands are associated with a higher rate of ACL injuries than those that do not have RIMD movement demands. This presentation will include a brief historic review of non- contact Anterior Cruciate injury prevention as well as a review of current programs to implement. Current literature will be reviewed to update injury and re-injury rates as well as modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors associated with non-contact ACL injuries. Advanced rehabilitation considerations and concepts of return to sport strengthening\, neuromuscular re-education and safe return to sport preparation will discussed. Two research validated safe to return to sport testing programs will be presented. The participants will learn how to introduce basic technology and applications into the clinic to assess these movements. \nAbout the Speaker \nBrian Mullins\, PT\, MS specializes in the care of complex physical therapy patients who need individualized physical therapy treatment. While at Duke University\, obtaining his Master’s degree\, he worked at The Center for Living\, Duke University’s premier wellness center. Here Brian worked with orthopaedic\, neurological\, cardiac and pulmonary patients who needed varying levels of care. \nBrian received his Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with a concentration in athletic training from Glassboro State College and has more than 20 years experience working with the everyday athlete to elite athletes of all ages. \nRecently\, Brian completed advanced training in functional biomechanics of the lower quarter; integrating technology into physical therapy practice from the Movement Performance Institute in Los Angeles California. This course work paired today’s technologies with a comprehensive understanding of normal and pathological biomechanics\, to develop an evidence based plan of care and return to sport readiness. \nBrian is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and former Treasurer of the American Physical Therapy Association of New Jersey. \nZoom link sent at registration. SUMMARY:CranioSacral Therapy Overview for the Physical Therapist
DESCRIPTION:CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle\, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams\, or about the weight of a nickel\, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system\, which has been shown to improve the functioning of the central nervous system\, as well as many other systems of the body\, such as digestive\, musculoskeletal\, respiratory\, circulatory\, and more. CST has also been shown to help with the physical components related to such somatic conditions as Post Traumatic Stress\, depression and anxiety. \nBy facilitating the body’s natural and innate healing processes\, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease\, and is effective for helping people with a wide range of healthcare challenges associated with pain and dysfunction. \n About the Speaker \n \nFredrick B. Stahlman\, PT\, CST-D earned his degree in physical therapy from Northwestern University and is Certified in CranioSacral Therapy-Diplomate level.  An instructor for The Upledger Institute\, Mr. Stahlman is also the owner of InterConnections Physical Therapy (West Palm Beach\, FL)\, a holistic physical therapy practice that specializes in CranioSacral Therapy\, Lymphatic Drainage\, Visceral Manipulation\, and a variety of other manual therapy modalities. With his extensive background in manual therapies and CranioSacral Therapy\, he is able to bridge traditional and complementary approaches to assist his patients in the understanding of the issues at hand and the belief systems that maintain them. \n  \nLink to participate will be emailed to registrants prior to presentation date. \nThis presentation is offered as a live event only. \n

SUMMARY:Bridging the Gap from Student to Practice Owner
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Brian Gallagher PT\, President & Founder of MEG Business Management \nIn 1997\, Brian founded one of Maryland’s largest therapy staffing companies\, while at the same time launching a multi-site private practice which resulted in a sale in 2006. Brian reacquired the practice in 2008\, thus doubling it\, before winning “Practice of the Year” in 2011. MEG Business Management began in 2006 as an educational coaching company training owners and their key employees on innovative practice management strategies. MEG has taken a major leap forward by developing a virtual training platform where practice owners now have the tools and training resources to professionally enhance\, track and manage employee performance and compliance. MEG also provides leading Billing Solutions\, Credentialing Services and website design & development. When Brian is not coaching or working on the training platform\, he can be found giving lectures at APTA\, PPS and CSM Annual Conferences\, as well as APTA State Chapters and DPT schools across the country. \nCourse Description: \nFor me\, getting accepted into Physical Therapy school was one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. I recall the rush of being in the lecture halls\, labs\, and later affiliations. It was so new and exciting\, until after graduation\, when I was suddenly on my own to figure out which career path I wanted to take. Not to mention all my questions\, such as what skills would I need as an employee\, as a staff therapist\, and as a clinical manager someday? \nAt the same time I was working on getting married\, buying a house\, and becoming a dad. Time suddenly became a scarce commodity. Work-life balance was quickly becoming harder to manage. For my sanity\, I needed to get off that busy life train and invest in the training I needed to acquire the executive abilities that I hadn’t learned in PT school. After all\, it’s often what you don’t know that holds you back in private practice. In this session\, we will discuss the operational skills and leadership mindset that happy\, successful PT professionals had to learn the hard way. With the proper training (versus “teachings”) you’ll understand how to bridge the gap from PT student\, to successful PT private practice owner. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nAchieve greater work-life balance through enhanced leadership and executive skills\nIdentify the 4 Keys to Practice Success and ideal company structure\nEstablish SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures)\nUnderstand the ideal strategy for starting up in private practice\n\n

SUMMARY:Management of the Patient with Patellofemoral Pain: An Update on a Clinical Practice Guideline
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Handout \nSpeaker: Lisa T. Hoglund\, PT\, PhD\, Professor\, Department of Physical Therapy\, Thomas Jefferson University \nPatellofemoral pain (PFP) is a common condition among adolescents and adults that causes significant pain\, reduced function\, and reduced physical activity. PFP is the number one cause of pain in runners. Even more concerning\, PFP is often chronic\, frequently recurs\, and may lead to development of patellofemoral osteoarthritis. One challenge to healthcare practitioners when treating patients with PFP is that it is not a homogenous condition. Similar to low back pain\, not all patients with PFP have the same impairments or respond to the same treatment. The Patellofemoral Pain Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG)\, published by the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy\, summarized the scientific evidence and can be used as an evidence-based guide for management of patients with PFP. This course will review and apply the PFP CPG evidence to a patient case to demonstrate use of proposed PFP subcategories to guide clinical decision making. Information related to patellofemoral osteoarthritis and sex-related differences for patients with PFP will also be covered. \nLearning Objectives: \nBy the end of this session\, the learner will be able to: \n\nDescribe evidence-based criteria for diagnosis of patellofemoral pain (PFP)\nChoose clinically-relevant tests and measures\, with the best psychometric properties\, to enhance clinical decision-making when treating individuals with PFP and patellofemoral osteoarthritis\nDescribe impairment- and function-based subcategories of PFP\, to improve targeted patient management\nSelect evidence-based interventions appropriate for specific PFP subcategories and patellofemoral osteoarthritis\nGiven a patient case\, classify the patient according to PFP subcategory diagnosis\n\nBrief Biography \nLisa T. Hoglund\, PT\, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) in Philadelphia\, PA. At TJU\, Dr. Hoglund teaches courses in musculoskeletal physical therapy\, differential diagnosis\, and pathophysiology of musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Hoglund’s research focuses on the biomechanical factors\, outcome measurement\, and conservative management of patellofemoral pain and knee osteoarthritis. She has received both external and internal funding to support her research and has published and presented her research findings nationally and internationally. To date\, Dr. Hoglund has 12 peer-reviewed publications and over 20 peer-reviewed published abstracts. She received the 2018 Best Research Presentation Award at the Annual Conference of the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association for her research presentation: “The 30-second fast-walk test: a reliable and valid measure of walking performance in persons with knee osteoarthritis.” Dr. Hoglund has practiced clinically for more than 30 years and is a board-certified orthopaedic clinical specialist (OCS).

SUMMARY:CPR Training
DESCRIPTION:With licensure renewal coming up\, we wanted to offer an opportunity for members to attend a CPR recertification course. We are still awaiting word from Geoff Christ\, Director of the Division of Professional Regulation\, to find out if there will be an extension for completing a CPR training\, as had been offered for 2020 (see this letter dated 3/19/20). Nonetheless\, we have created the opportunity for people to take a hybrid version of CPR recertification. The educational component will be offered in an online format – allowing you to take that portion anytime prior to the skill check. The skills check will be offered at 3 locations\, each on a different date. You will choose a date/location and a time will be assigned. The check-offs will occur in groups of 3-4 and will be socially distanced. \nSaturday Dec. 12th 3:30-4:30pm at Performance Physical Therapy\, Hockessin\, DE \n2 Additional dates will be offered in January on a Saturday\, with one being in Greenville\, DE and the other in Dover\, DE.

SUMMARY:The Role of Enriched Environments in the Future of Neurologic/Geriactric/Brain Rehabilitation
DESCRIPTION:DPTA Summer Lecture Series \nThe Role of Enriched Environments in the Future of Neurologic/Geriactric/Brain Rehabilitation \nOne of the most consistently supported principles of neuroscience is the impact of enriched environments on the brain and behavior of social animals and humans. In this discussion\, we will review what specifically makes up an enriched environment\, (EE)\, how an EE results in changes in the brain and most importantly open up a discussion of how to elevate the social and physical enrichment of your clinical practice. \nSpeaker: Cole Galloway\, Ph.D.\, PT \n7:00-7:30 – Membership Update – Stacie Larkin\, DPTA President \n7:30-8:30 – Invited Speaker: Cole Galloway \n  \nCEUs: .15 CEUs for attending both the meeting and Cole’s talk \n  \nMembers: $25 \nNon-members: $40 \nPT/PTA Students: free \nAbout the Speaker: Cole Galloway\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware. He is most interested in rapidly protoyping novel technology (often DIY) to assist children (and “older children\,” aka adults) in maximizing their real-world exploration – specifically combining low tech and high tech into “Go Tech.” In 2014\, Cole’s work was featured in a TEDMED talk. He was included in Buzzfeed’s “31 moments that restored our faith in humanity” and was named one of the “twenty people making a difference in healthcare” by Health Leaders Media Journal. This year\, Cole was honored with APTA’s Societal Impact Award.  He is most proud of his association with the international Go Baby Go movement\, whose mission is to help everyone co-create their world through mobility. \n  \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:DPTA's Summer Lecture Series – July 31\, 2018
DESCRIPTION:DPTA’s Summer Lecture Series: Communication Skills for Working with People Who Have Dementia\nFree to attend. All members of the community are welcomed!\nCEUs: 0.2 CEUs available for PTs/PTAs\, OTs/COTAs and Speech Therapists. CEU certificates are free for DPTA members and CCHS Rehab employees\, otherwise $25. \nBy participating in this seminar you will be able to: \n\nDescribe the communication challenges that are associated with the brain changes in various forms of dementia.\nTranslate various non-verbal ways people with dementia may communicate to express their physical\, psychological and social needs.\nImplement changes in your verbal and non-verbal approach while working as a care partner for people with dementia.\n\n  \nRegister Today\nDownload event flyer here\n  \nPresented By: Dr. Cathy Ciolek | PT\, DPT\, FAPTA \nDr. Ciolek is President of Living Well With Dementia\, LLC- providing education and consultation to promote well-being and positive expectations for people with dementia. She has nearly 30 years physical therapy clinical experience working with older adults across the continuum of care and is a Board Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist. Additionally\, Cathy is a Certified Dementia Practitioner® as well as a Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer®. She was recently recognized as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association for her advocacy efforts for older adults. \nCommunication is the basis for every interaction between human beings and involves providing a message and interpreting a message for each person. The brain changes that occur in people with dementia interferes with their expression of verbal messages as the disease progresses\, but also with how they interpret and process incoming information. Similarly\, the message conveyed is more than just words used as it involves non-verbal communications even more than verbal. This course will help you take a second look at how your approach and word choices impact a person with dementia and how care partners (professionals\, providers and family members) can better translate the messages people with dementia are providing.
