SUMMARY:The ABCs of Behavior: Engaging Children with Positive Behavior Strategies (1.5 CEs)
DESCRIPTION:APTA DE members use promo code DPTA20 (If you are not an active member of the APTA Delaware\, please do not use this code)\nPediatric physical therapists frequently encounter children who are difficult to serve due to their “challenging” behaviors. Challenging behaviors can be frustrating as therapists generally report a lack of preparation for managing these behaviors. This session will focus on identifying the key characteristics of behavior and influences that may impact behavior during therapy sessions. Attendees will be introduced to the four main functions of human behavior and the related strategies to provide a positive\, functional therapy session. Attendees will also learn how to observe and modify antecedents and consequences to behaviors to increase positive\, engaged behaviors and to decrease ‘challenging’ behaviors of the children they serve. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \n \nAlyssa LaForme Fiss\, PT\, PhD \nAlyssa LaForme Fiss\, PT\, PhD is a Professor of Physical Therapy at Texas Women’s University in Dallas\, Texas. She received her Bachelor and Master degrees in Physical Therapy at The Ohio State University and her PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Kentucky. She is a Board-Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist and has worked in a variety of pediatric clinical settings over her career. Dr. Fiss’s research focuses on developmental trajectories of children with cerebral palsy and on facilitation of adaptive behaviors in young children with disabilities. The daughter of a child behavioral psychologist\, Dr. Fiss has spent time and effort to understand the roll of behavior strategies to improve intervention effectiveness. She has included behavior content in her entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy pediatric course for the past decade. Dr. Fiss is the co-editor of the text\, Meeting the Physical Therapy Needs of Children\, 3rd Ed.\, and she has published and presented widely at the national and international level. \n  \nLink to participate will be emailed to registrants prior to presentation date. \nThis presentation is offered as a live event only.

SUMMARY:The Role of Enriched Environments in the Future of Neurologic/Geriactric/Brain Rehabilitation
DESCRIPTION:DPTA Summer Lecture Series \nThe Role of Enriched Environments in the Future of Neurologic/Geriactric/Brain Rehabilitation \nOne of the most consistently supported principles of neuroscience is the impact of enriched environments on the brain and behavior of social animals and humans. In this discussion\, we will review what specifically makes up an enriched environment\, (EE)\, how an EE results in changes in the brain and most importantly open up a discussion of how to elevate the social and physical enrichment of your clinical practice. \nSpeaker: Cole Galloway\, Ph.D.\, PT \n7:00-7:30 – Membership Update – Stacie Larkin\, DPTA President \n7:30-8:30 – Invited Speaker: Cole Galloway \n  \nCEUs: .15 CEUs for attending both the meeting and Cole’s talk \n  \nMembers: $25 \nNon-members: $40 \nPT/PTA Students: free \nAbout the Speaker: Cole Galloway\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware. He is most interested in rapidly protoyping novel technology (often DIY) to assist children (and “older children\,” aka adults) in maximizing their real-world exploration – specifically combining low tech and high tech into “Go Tech.” In 2014\, Cole’s work was featured in a TEDMED talk. He was included in Buzzfeed’s “31 moments that restored our faith in humanity” and was named one of the “twenty people making a difference in healthcare” by Health Leaders Media Journal. This year\, Cole was honored with APTA’s Societal Impact Award.  He is most proud of his association with the international Go Baby Go movement\, whose mission is to help everyone co-create their world through mobility. \n  \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:DPTA's Summer Lecture Series – July 31\, 2018
DESCRIPTION:DPTA’s Summer Lecture Series: Communication Skills for Working with People Who Have Dementia\nFree to attend. All members of the community are welcomed!\nCEUs: 0.2 CEUs available for PTs/PTAs\, OTs/COTAs and Speech Therapists. CEU certificates are free for DPTA members and CCHS Rehab employees\, otherwise $25. \nBy participating in this seminar you will be able to: \n\nDescribe the communication challenges that are associated with the brain changes in various forms of dementia.\nTranslate various non-verbal ways people with dementia may communicate to express their physical\, psychological and social needs.\nImplement changes in your verbal and non-verbal approach while working as a care partner for people with dementia.\n\n  \nRegister Today\nDownload event flyer here\n  \nPresented By: Dr. Cathy Ciolek | PT\, DPT\, FAPTA \nDr. Ciolek is President of Living Well With Dementia\, LLC- providing education and consultation to promote well-being and positive expectations for people with dementia. She has nearly 30 years physical therapy clinical experience working with older adults across the continuum of care and is a Board Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist. Additionally\, Cathy is a Certified Dementia Practitioner® as well as a Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer®. She was recently recognized as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association for her advocacy efforts for older adults. \nCommunication is the basis for every interaction between human beings and involves providing a message and interpreting a message for each person. The brain changes that occur in people with dementia interferes with their expression of verbal messages as the disease progresses\, but also with how they interpret and process incoming information. Similarly\, the message conveyed is more than just words used as it involves non-verbal communications even more than verbal. This course will help you take a second look at how your approach and word choices impact a person with dementia and how care partners (professionals\, providers and family members) can better translate the messages people with dementia are providing.

SUMMARY:Your LGBTQ patient: Providing Culturally Competent Care
DESCRIPTION:Join us April 29\, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm for Your LGBTQ patient: Providing Culturally Competent Care \nPresenters: DE LGBTQ Health Equity Task Force (Karla A. Bell – UD and Tim Rodden-Christiana Care)\n \nRegistration Fees: Members: FREE; Non-members: $25\n \nLocation:  Bayhealth Kent General\, 640 South State Street\, Dover\, Delaware 19901; Room: Pavilion 1 & 2\n \nDescription: Being aware that health disparities (difference in rate\, illness\, or condition specific to a population) exist is the first step in becoming more culturally competent in healthcare. This population has significant health disparities. APTA’s focus on including our LGBT patients in its cultural competency focus has been lacking. Our profession dictates that we “eliminate disparities in the health status of people of diverse cultural backgrounds\, respond to current and projected demographic changes in the US\, and improve the quality of health services and health outcomes\, and meet legislative\, regulatory\, and accreditation standards.” PTs identify health risks when examining patients\, and determine appropriate referrals. APTA’s web site lists 5 constructs of cultural competence: cultural awareness\, cultural knowledge\, cultural skill\, cultural encounters\, and cultural desire. Physical therapists should apply those constructs to our LGBT patients as well. \nObjectives:\n \n\nUse common terms when providing care to sexual and gender minoritie\nIdentify specific health disparities for our LGBT patients and understand the need to screen our patients appropriately for best practice health care delivery\n\nOther Information: \n\nNumber of CEUs (session is 1 ½ hours)\nHandouts will be provided\nAudience: all PTs and PTAs; any setting\nCertificates of completion will be provided 2 weeks after the meeting.\n\nRegistration Information: You may register for this event in 1 of 2 ways: \n\nOnline: Please visit our EventBrite registration page to register online. You will not incur a registration fee if you register online.\nVia mail: Please make checks payable the Delaware Physical Therapy Association and mail with a copy of the registration form (linked below) to DPTA 1055 North Fairfax Street\, Suite 205\, Alexandria\, VA 22314.\nRegistration Form_LGBTQ Patient\n\nTo protect your privacy\, we CANNOT accept credit card information via fax or email. \nPlease contact us at delaware@apta.org with questions. \n  \n
