SUMMARY:Sars-Cov-2 and the Disparate Effects of COVID-19 Among People of Color (1.5 CEs)
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will provide an introduction to the biology of coronaviruses\, emphasizing SARS-Cov-2\, the virus that causes COVID-19. This will include the transmission and effects of infection and the disproportionate prevalence of disease in people of color. The presentation will also focus on COVID-19\, the immune response\, and will investigate increased mortality in communities of color. Also included will be the mitigation efforts and a comparison of the action of the available vaccines. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \n \nSandra D. Adams\, Ph.D. \nDr. Sandra Daise Adams is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Montclair State University. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Georgia\, a Master of Education in Biology Education from Georgia State University\, a Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of Pittsburgh\, and a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics with a research focus on virology from Georgia State University. \nDr. Adams regularly teaches courses in Principles of Biology\, Virology\, Immunology and Viruses and Disease. She has incorporated the study of viruses in the introductory biology laboratory course in which freshman students isolate\, purify\, and characterize a novel bacteriophage from the soil. She maintains an active research laboratory investigating the effects of natural products on virus infection\, focusing on inhibition and modes of action. \n  \nLink to participate will be emailed to registrants prior to presentation date.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation Handout \nDescription: \nThis presentation will provide an overview of the pathophysiology of COVID-19 and its effects on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. Medical management of COVID-19 and its implications for physical therapy management will be discussed. Following\, physical therapy examination and treatment techniques for the cardiovascular and pulmonary system\, including how to screen for post-intensive care unit syndrome\, will be reviewed. \n Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the pathophysiology of COVID-19\, including direct and indirect changes to the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems.\nIdentify signs and symptoms of post-intensive care syndrome during clinical examination.\nDiscuss basic cardiovascular and pulmonary examination and treatment techniques.\n\n \nPresenter: \nJulie M. Skrzat\, PT\, DPT\, PhD\, CCS \nJulie is an Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences at Mary Baldwin University\, Fishersville\, VA.  She earned her BS\, MS\, and DPT degrees from Ithaca College\, and her PhD from Temple University. She has been an APTA Board Certified Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Specialist since 2015.  In addition to teaching\, Julie partners with Lehigh Valley Health Network to conduct research\, which focuses on optimizing patient outcomes for those in the acute care setting. She maintains her clinical practice at VCU’s Health System. Julie is the owner of Dusza\, LLC\, a company dedicated to spreading education on cardiovascular and pulmonary health\, which she believes is the core of movement. \n
